Student Visa: Work Permits, Business Restrictions, and Path to a Business Visa
A student visa allows up to 28 hours/week of part-time work and running a sole proprietorship or registering a company, but not a salaried director role.
Work permission for part-time employment (資格外活動許可, the blanket/comprehensive permit, ① 包括許可) grants a limit of 28 hours per week (more during school vacations); it is often stamped automatically at the airport upon entry. A student visa holder may run a sole proprietorship in parallel within these 28 hours. A student visa does not allow official hiring of employees or serving as a salaried company director, but a student can register a company and file for a change of status.
