Unverified Rumors and Related Notes on the BM Visa
Unconfirmed chat rumors point to a possible future capital hike and a new activity-essay requirement; representative directors generally need BM or HSP status.
Rumors have circulated in chat about a possible further increase of the required BM visa capital to 50-60-100 million yen. Part of this (the 50 million figure) later turned out to be a joke; another part (60-100 million yen over 5 years) remains an unconfirmed concern among participants. There is no official confirmation of any such plans as of this knowledge base's compilation. Since July 2025 (not confirmed by all chat participants), a new requirement reportedly applies: attaching a free-form "essay report" on the company's activities for the visa period, titled along the lines of "直近の在留期間における事業の経営に関する活動内容につきまして" (regarding the content of business management activities during the most recent period of stay). As general background: a representative director (代表取締役) of a company, as a general rule, requires either a BM or an HSP (Highly Skilled Professional) visa. An ordinary director without an executive role or salary can hold nearly any status, including a student visa.
