# Linked memos: connect related memos

A memo can point to other memos that are related but cover a separate topic. For example, a billing overview can link to the memo for each plan, or a project decision can link to the memo with its background. Linking keeps each memo focused on one topic instead of merging everything into one long note.

How to link: ask your AI, for example "link this memo to the one about our pricing". It can add links when it saves a new memo or updates an existing one.

What you see:
- On a memo's page, linked memos appear as small chips under the text - click one to open it.
- When your AI reads a memo, it gets the titles of the memos it links to and the memos that link back to it, so it can follow the trail to related context.
- Search results show the titles of linked memos too.

Rules:
- A project memo can link only to memos in the same project.
- A private memo can link only to your own private memos.
- A memo cannot link to itself.
- Links go one way and belong to the memo that holds them. The memo you link to is not changed; it simply shows the other one as linking back to it.
- Someone sees a link only if they are allowed to read the memo it points to. Links to memos they cannot read are hidden from them.
- If a linked memo is deleted, the link stays while the memo sits in deleted items (45 days, restorable). Once the memo is erased for good, the link goes away.

Linked memos are included in data exports and are returned by the developer API when it reads a memo.
